What is a Vinyl Decal?

This may seem like a silly question, but it is a necessary question in order to clearly differential vinyl decals from other types of stickers and appliques.

While shopping for tailgate inserts or similar products, you may see the word "decals" used for items that are not actually decals. Many vendors insert the term "decals" in their product descriptions when in fact they sell thick plastic or metal letters. They do this on order to show up on search results for "decals" for greater exposure.

By definition, thick plastic and metal letters are not decals. They are appliques and emblems. Using the term "decals" for these products tends to confuse the consumer.

So what is a vinyl decal? Let's let Google answer that question. Here is Google's response"

A vinyl decal is essentially a sticker made from thin, flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film, coated with adhesive. It's designed to be applied to various surfaces like glass, metal, or wood. Vinyl decals are known for their durability and versatility, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Constructions:
Vinyl decals consist of three layers: a graphic layer (the design), a middle adhesive layer, and a bottom backing paper.
Types:
Decals are cut from colored vinyl sheets and rolls.
Application:
They can be applied to a variety of surfaces and are often used for signage, decoration, or personalization.
Removal:
Vinyl decals can be removed, but it often requires some effort and may involve heat or specialized techniques.
Distinction from stickers:
While often used interchangeably, decals can be more intricate and have a transfer layer for easier application of complex designs, unlike regular stickers.
